Empty Nester – Extraordinaire

creating, living, loving – all in a long black skirt

wednesday wednesday

On the table in the sewing studio are the parts for one of the cutest girls dresses I’ve had the pleasure to design: The Wednesday dress.  Just like Wednesday Addams. It’s a goth favorite.

I made one for Ravynn when she was 2. She wore it until Whisper grew into it and Whisper wore it until she couldn’t. Now, that very dress is hanging in my fabric storage closest ready to be pulled out and used for inspiration.  When I feel my energy level slipping or when I’ve clearly overloaded my schedule and simply need the reminder that “Your children love what you do and who you are.  Carry on Mum,” I hold it in my hands and I feel stronger, better, more determined.

I want to sew for the girls [and the boys], but I have pending orders [note the Wednesday dress I just mentioned] to finish and ship.  I also have website updates to finish and discuss with my designer.  There are minor updates needed to Etsy and ArtFire.  And I have sketches for more designs  that I desperately want to mock up a pattern of and get ready to promote.

But first things first, so tomorrow I will complete the dress.

Maybe after that, I’ll photograph the sewing studio to share with my bloggy friends.

I grew up with a craft loving mother, and she taught all her daughters (she had 5) to sew (as well as crochet, cross stitch, knit, embroider, etc). That dress is just too cute! I just don’t have the time or resources to sew my own clothes now, but I am safe in the knowledge that should the need ever arise, I could whip a mean seam. I look forward to reading your blog 🙂

All of my kids [two boys, two girls] want to sew. Jordan [13] took a home-ec class this past semester and he did a great job! When his homework schedule is a little more calm, I’ll teach him more. Girls always start with skirts; maybe some pajama/lounge pants for him??

Thank you for the compliments on the dress. I love it and need to work on a bigger pattern for my girls.

    Time, methinks, is mine enemy.

    Thanks for stopping by!!

I have always wanted to be able to sew! And Knit, for that matter. I have tried, I failed miserably at sewing in home ec in high school, and every other attempt I have made to learn ends in disaster. And knitting, I think of all the colorful and funky hats and scarves I could make.. but again, I SUCK! That, and I don’t have the patience to sit and knit for hours on end. I envy your talents!!

Thank you, Mandy. I must admit to my own difficulties with knitting. I’m getting better, but it’s taking more patience than I have on a regular basis. Now… crocheting? I can do that with my eyes closed – literally – and it still turns out. I’m hoping I find some patience soon – the kids want to learn, so they can make granny squares and send them off to a charity that assembles them into quilts for the homeless. Again, my kids rock 🙂

Beautiful, child, photo and dress. I’m sending extra hours to all of you.

Thank you! I need the extra hours today 🙂 That child is my own sweet Ravynn. She was my very first model.
